Building Zimbabwe's Bamboo Economy

Vision: To position Zimbabwe as a leading bamboo economy in Africa, driving sustainable industrialisation, environmental restoration, and inclusive rural prosperity.

Mission: To develop a structured bamboo ecosystem in Zimbabwe through germplasm conservation and propagation systems, establishment of bamboo nurseries and plantations, capacity building and technical training, industrial pilot projects and value addition systems, policy advocacy and institutional engagement, and international partnerships for technology transfer and investment.

What we are appointed to do

Bamboo Zimbabwe respectfully proposes appointment by ICBR and INBAR as the National Bamboo Ambassador for Zimbabwe, with a mandate covering six strategic areas of work.

Central Coordinating Authority

Establish a central authority to guide and coordinate all national bamboo initiatives, serving as the go-to resource for government ministries, investors, and communities.

Primary International Liaison

Serve as the structured entry point for INBAR and ICBR collaboration — translating global bamboo knowledge and networks into Zimbabwean and SADC-wide impact.

Curated Pilot Projects

Lead demonstration projects proving bamboo's economic, environmental, and climate impact — from seedling nurseries and plantation management to value-addition enterprises.

Investment Mobilisation

Attract domestic and international capital for sector-wide scale-up. Produce transparent reporting to build investor confidence and attract carbon finance and green bonds.

Policy and Regulatory Advice

Advise ministries on bamboo policy frameworks, guidelines, and regulatory strategies. Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues while maintaining diplomatic respect for government mandates.

Monitoring and Reporting

Maintain rigorous baselines, monitor progress against sector targets, and publish annual reports to ensure accountability to ICBR, INBAR, and the Government of Zimbabwe.

Inspired by China's Sanya Research Base (Hainan Province), we are developing a national facility at our Concession site in Mazowe District.

National Germplasm Banking

Establishing Zimbabwe's central bamboo genetic resource bank for species conservation and certified planting material distribution.

Research & Development Hub

Conducting applied research on bamboo species adaptation, propagation techniques, and industrial applications for Zimbabwean conditions.

Seedling Propagation Centre

Large-scale seedling production using modern propagation methods including tissue culture to supply provincial nursery networks.

Training & Demonstration

Providing hands-on training for farmers, technicians, and entrepreneurs in bamboo cultivation, processing, and value addition.

National Nursery Coordination

Two confirmed indigenous species and over 30 naturalised varieties — a rich biological foundation for sector development.

Zimbabwe's most widespread indigenous bamboo. Found along the Zambezi Valley and lowveld river systems. Used for construction, basket weaving, and traditional instruments.

Highland forest species found in the Eastern Highlands. A confirmed native forming dense bamboo stands in montane forest ecosystems.
